Taxonomy of Engineering Education Research: Call for Abstracts

Call for Abstracts: White Papers that Map the Field of Engineering Education Research

Abstract Deadline extended: due 01/15/13

White paper abstracts are solicited which describe efforts and outcomes to define keywords and organizing frameworks for the broad field of engineering education research. Final white papers will include a description of methodology and a list of keywords or similar index terms. The white papers will be used as input for further conversations to develop and refine the taxonomy which include a variety of workshops, online interactions, and open sessions at national and international conferences.

Approximately four white papers will be commissioned, and authors will receive a $250 honorarium (per paper, to be shared among authors).

This is an open call for white paper proposals, and it is intended to be as inclusive as possible. The field of engineering education research is broad and diverse, and much work in this domain has been accomplished in other disciplines. As such, proposals representing diverse approaches and global perspectives are encouraged, and contributions that align with the project’s goal are welcomed from researchers in any field or country. Relevant deadlines for the white papers include:

  • 01/15/13. 1,500 word abstracts for white papers due by email to Cindy Finelli (cfinelli@umich.edu)
  • 01/31/13. Authors notified whether abstract is accepted or declined
  • 03/15/13. 5,000-word (maximum) white papers due

If invited, white papers should leverage various efforts to categorize the field of engineering education research and should summarize prior work on keywords and organizing frameworks for the field, potentially leveraging experiences in other disciplines and looking forward. A total of 2,000-3,000 words should be dedicated to a careful description of methodology, and the remainder should present the keywords and the organizing framework.

Questions should be directed to Cindy Finelli (cfinelli@umich.edu)
